Mwingi famine relief 2017
The overall objective of the emergency relief assistance was to provide food to drought victims in Mukonga, Ngomeni, Katse,Kathiani and Nuu.
Kujenga Maisha East Africa (Kumea) was established and registered in Kenya in June 2010 as an NGO for the new Apostolic Church; East Africa District, It grew out of the relief and humanitarian efforts of the church that had been going on for five years. KUMEA is a faith based NGO; it operates beyond the boundaries of the New Apostolic Church. It brings together people of all faiths and persuasions without discrimination.
From January 2017, the Country was affected by severe drought with an estimated 2.7 million people affected.The drought was on 10th February declared a national disaster with calls being made for aid to counter the drought that is posing a major risk to people, livestock and wildlife. The Kenya Red Cross has estimated around 2.7 million people are in need of food aid after low rainfall in October and November and the next rainy season not due before April.
KUMEA funded by NAK-Karitative implemented a relief food distribution in the month of May 2017 to 5000 households of people affected by the drought in Mwingi.The project intended to compliment the government efforts in alleviating the suffering of the drought victims by distributing relief food in Mwingi where we currently have other humanitarian activities. The locations in which the food was distributed were Mukonga, Ngomeni, Katse,Kathiani and Nuu. In each of the centres, food was distributed to 1000 households.
The food distributed is expected to last them between three weeks and a month. The short rains have already started and it is expected that the hunger situation will be very soon under control
