Mukuru slum development project
The Mukuru youth and young women empowerment was initiated in the informal settlements of Mukuru to improve the livelihoods of the youths and young women through various innovative models thus enabling youths and young women overcome poverty and improve their economic capabilities through sustainable income generating activities.
The objective of the projects has been as follows
a) To offer employment opportunities to youth in the informal settlement through the Economic Empowerment Project;
b) To improve access to quality health care services for youth and young women through the Afya Bora Project ;
c) To improve sanitation and hygiene conditions in Mukuru slums through the Urban Sanitation Project
The project has been working with various groups engaged to meet specific objectives as per the project objectives. The project embarked on development of key water and sanitation facility and development of borehole. Also capacity building to various cadre of youths and women has been carried out. Key for the sustainability of the project has been the selection and training of management committee for WASH and other groups involved in the following activities –solid waste management, recycling of solid waste and groups involved in production of briquette.
In addition, various youth and women groups have been trained on value addition to enhance the production of various food stuff ear marked for production as income generating activities. A series of clean up exercise have been carried in the informal settlement to enhance environmental cleanliness and develop sustainability mechanism of undertaking similar exercise on their own through the purchase of cleaning equipment’s’ and tools.
So far the project is in the course to attain all the project objectives and enhance community capacity in addressing the needs of the youths in the informal settlement.
