Igembe Dairy Goat & Rural Livelihoods Project Phase 2
Igembe dairy and agroforestry livelihood project is a livelihood project that aims to improve the living standards of the rural communities through dairy goat rearing and promotion of agroforestry through women groups and tart schools & villages.
The project is meant to achieve the following three objectives;
Improve livestock and milk production for increased income and livelihood support
Improve environment protection and soil fertility through agro-forestry
Improve access to dairy goat products through promotion of value addition
The project was initiated in the community through the project orientation forum and process where the respective community leaders, leaders of the target women groups, head teachers of the target schools, Sub county livestock officers, Sub county forest officers and the local administration were involved. The objective of the orientation forum was to give an overview of the project and plan implementation process. The outcome was the development of implementation plans with involvement of the target women groups, target schools and the role to be played by respective stakeholders i.e. livestock department, forestry department and KUMEA. Project orientation report was prepared and shared to various partners.
The project has been able to implement a series of training and capacity building sessions with target groups as per the plans and also mobilized respective groups to prepare group members for preparation of livestock housing units, contribute funds for livestock upkeep through the groups revolving fund and involvement of livestock officers in sourcing of the goats for the project beneficiaries.
At the moment all the group members have received the dairy goats as per the project plans and more capacity building sessions have been planned to enhance effective management of the live stocks and promotion of agroforestry in respective schools and villages. The project has attained approximately 70% completion rate as per the key outputs and outcome
